In 2 weeks time all 32 teams in this year’s World Cup have played their 3 group stage games and half of them are now going home. Adios. See you in 4 years…maybe. Oh man that stings. This tournament is captivating and cruel.
The Europeans are dominating again; South America has just 2 teams left; but check out Asia and Africa with 2 teams each. (And note, all the qualifying teams from Asia are now moving on.) If you fell out of bed last night it’s not you. The world’s soccer axis has started to shift. What this means for the US will be determined today. *And if you haven’t been following Morocco, it’s time to tune in. Tuchel never appreciated H. Ziyech’s cheeky style but that’s a slight on Tuchel. For a master class in passing, or what my newest friend, the legendary Coach TJ Kostecky considers the player-defining-feature of the best players, “vision,” you can’t find a better teacher.
So welcome to the Round of 16 with single game elimination and just 2 games per day. Today’s features the USA v Netherlands at 10am and ARGENTINA v Australia at 2pm.
The Egg’s Nest is hosting both games again, in style. Come in early and try the insane Monte Cristo sandwich for breakfast and lunch. If you haven’t noticed yet, they’ve stocked beer from every country in the Cup. So show some national pride when you drink today, Budweiser in the a.m. and Quilmes, of course, in the p.m. as we watch the Albicelestes run roughshod over the Aussie’s. (Get nervous Brazil fans…we’re coming :)
